My pet has been skunked, what do I do?

If your pet gets skunked, it usually tends to be in the evening when our salon is closed. If you choose to attempt a deskunking to get your nose thru the evening, make sure that you DO NOT get your pet wet first, if you get your pet wet first you will only spread the oils and make it worse. There are several home remedies that you can find online. The key is to apply your desired solution directly to the affected areas, avoiding the eyes. This will help rid your pet of that foul odor and get you through the hours until we can give your pet a professional deskunking.

My pet has had a severe allergic reaction to the Rabies vaccine in the past. Can he or she still be groomed?

While we do usually require that all pets who come into our salon be current on their Rabies vaccine, we do understand that some pets are unable to have the vaccine due to a severe allergic reaction.  If this is the case with your pet, then we do require a note from your pet’s doctor.

What vaccines do you require?

Nowadays, many pet parents choose to not over vaccinate their pets and instead titre (blood test) their pets to make sure that they are not deficient in any antibodies. Because of this, we only require Rabies, since it is also required by law, and we leave the rest of the vaccines up to the individual owner.

My dog has anxiety about grooming. What do you do to help relax him or her?

We use aromatherapy in order to help our furry friends have a calm, relaxing experience. When you first enter our salon, you will notice the essential oil diffusers spreading a relaxing aromatherapy blend into the air. We have multiple aromatherapy diffusers running throughout the salon all day.  In addition to our diffusers, we also use Mellow Pet Spray and Happy Hoodies in the bathing room when drying pets in order to lessen the noise of the dryer and to create a calmer environment.

What products do you use to keep your salon from smelling like wet dog?

We have strict cleaning guidelines here at The UpScale Tail in order to keep our salon looking and smelling great. We use pet and eco-friendly products to clean to keep our furry clients safe and healthy.  We clean and sanitize all cages, tables, and floors daily. We also sanitize our shampoo systems with vinegar on a regular basis, which many salons do not do.  In addition to our strict cleaning guidelines, we also use aromatherapy here to keep our salon smelling great and to keep our furry clients happy and relaxed.

Can I bring toys, treats, and/or a blanket for my pet?

We do not recommend that you bring those items unless you receive prior approval from our staff. We will not be responsible for lost or misplaced items.

My pet has fleas. Can I still bring him or her in for an appointment?

Yes, we do offer flea baths for pets with fleas, though, for the wellbeing of all the pets here, we do require that you make us aware that your pet has fleas when you book his or her appointment.

Can I bathe my pet at home and then bring him or her in for a haircut?

We want to make sure that all pets who come to us for grooming look their best after their visit. Pets not cleaned immediately before grooming may carry some dirt and debris in their coats, which causes our equipment to become dull and break down more quickly. Because of this, only under certain circumstances and with prior approval, do we allow owners to bathe their pets at home prior to his or her grooming appointment.  If your pet has a specific medical condition that could be triggered by bathing him or her here, please call us to discuss it and we can see if we are able to make an accommodation.

Can I leave my pet’s leash, collar, clothes, or carrier with him or her at the appointment?

While we do not recommend leaving your pet’s leash, collar, blankets, beds, and/or clothes with us unless you have prior approval from our staff, we do recommend, however, that you leave your cat’s carrier with us at the appointment since most cats prefer to stay in their carriers when not being groomed since it is their safe place.

My pet is elderly. Can he or she still be groomed?

As long as we feel it is be safe for your pet, then yes, we can still groom him or her. If, at any point during your pet’s appointment, we feel as if grooming becomes unsafe due to your pet’s health concerns, then we may have to either take breaks, which would make the appointment longer, or we may have to send him or her home early. We will do everything possible to make your pet as comfortable as possible and finish the groom but your pet’s safety and wellbeing is our ultimate concern.

My dog just had surgery. Can he or she still be groomed?

As long as your veterinarian gives you prior approval and as long as we feel it is safe for your pet, then yes, we can still groom him or her.

What kind of dryers do you use?

We use NON-HEATED forced air dryers to straighten the coat and blow out the loose coat that ends up on your floor at home. We also use cool fans for those intolerable of drying.

What information will I need to bring with or provide at my pet’s first appointment?

All new clients and existing clients that bring in new pets are required to fill out our Client Information Form 24 hours in advance of your appointment. You will receive this form in your appointment notification emails. If you forget, please arrive 15 minutes early and we will hand you the form to fill out in your car. Once the form is complete, we will check your pet in.

Do you provide water?

Water is provided upon owner’s request or if we feel a pet is in need of water. Otherwise, we do not provide water dishes in the crates for safety reasons, though every pet is welcome to take a drink while in the bathtub.

Can I bring my own shampoo?

Yes, as long as it is not an oatmeal based shampoo. We are a grain-free salon and we do not want to take the chance of cross contamination from a shampoo with grain.

Will my dog be crated at any time during the grooming experience?

  • For the safety of all of furry clients, we do use crates, though we do provide all clients with a soft, clean bed in their crates after their bath. If your dog is unable to be crated due to health or behavioral issues, then we may be able to make an exception and tether your dog next to us in the grooming area.  We do, however, require notice of any of these health or behavioral issues prior to your appointment.

Can I bring my own treats?

Yes, as long as they are grain free treats, you are able to bring your own treats. If you do bring your own treats, please make sure your pet’s first and last name is marked on it in order to ensure that we return it to you. Or, if you prefer, we can save the treats here for your pet’s next visit.

What kind of treats do you use at your salon?

We are a grain-free salon so all of our treats do not contain any grains. Most of our treats are purchased from Two Bostons in Naperville, IL.

Does my dog get potty breaks?

If your dog is here for longer than 5 hours or if your dog expresses the need to have to go to the bathroom, then yes, we will take your dog outside to potty. We do ask that you make sure that your pet has gone potty before it comes into our salon. We provide potty bags and there is a grassy walking area in front of our salon.

Do you only groom dogs and cats?

No, we groom all types of animals – dogs, cats, rabbits, guinea pigs, ferrets, etc. If you have any questions about a specific type of pet, feel free to call us at 630-632-(TAIL) 8245.

Do you offer any other services, such as dog walking, pet sitting and/or boarding?

Some of our staff offers all of the above services, although our salon itself does not offer any boarding or pet sitting. Please call us at the salon at 630-632-TAIL (8245) and we will refer you to the appropriate party.

Can I stay and watch my pet while he or she is being groomed?

You are welcome to wait in our lobby while your pet is being groomed, but the entire grooming experience does take between 3.5 to 4 hours. In addition, some dogs do get easily distracted and will not behave as well if they are able to see, smell, or hear their owners because they are focused on their owner rather than on us. Depending on your dog’s reaction to you staying and watching, we may have to ask you to leave for a few hours in order for us to keep your dog and our staff safe. Sharp equipment and excited animals do not mix well.

Do I need to book an appointment in advance or do you accept walk ins?

We require appointments for all services. We recommend scheduling grooming appointments a few weeks in advance. If you prefer a regular standing appointment, we can book you out for an entire year.

How many groomers work at The UpScale Tail?

We have a wide variety of stylists with different specialties all geared towards giving your pet a positive experience! Please refer to our Meet our Staff page to learn more about our groomers and assistants.

Why don’t you have your prices listed on your website?

Our prices are based on the type of appointment, your pet’s breed, size, coat type, and coat condition. Due to all of the possible variations in these categories, our prices do vary. Because of this, we do not list our prices online but we will gladly give you a price estimate either in person, over the phone, or by email with a photo. When emailing a photo, please have the dog standing next to your knee so we can judge the size better.

My dog is aggressive and has been kicked out of several grooming salons. Do you muzzle? What about sedation?

No, we do not muzzle nor do we use sedation. We have a different approach to gaining the trust of our clients. We work with positive reinforcement, grain-free treats, aromatherapy, and meet and greets.

Back to Index

What happens if my pet is not cooperative?

We try to make the experience as positive as possible, so we will not push your pet any further than he or she is comfortable with. If this is the case, the appointment may last longer than normal. This is where the overlap of appointment time can happen. We will also give you a verbal report and prescribe practice sessions, meet and greets or whatever it takes for your pet to overcome his or her fears.

Back to Index

How long will the appointment take?

The entire experience takes about 3.5 to 4 hours. We want to make sure your pet, along with every other pet in our care, has a positive experience, so we will not rush through the bathing or grooming process. Please keep in mind that we work with a lot of fearful pets and sometimes your pet’s appointment may take a bit longer if there happens to be a NEW fearful client that we are working with ahead of your pet.
